Murray Library Black Achievment:Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Inspiring the Future Display
Display in Library for the Month of January & February
Young people can make a difference and have done so for generations. In January and February, Murray Library’s display cases will highlight the children, teens, and young adults who fought hard for justice and equality in our country during the American Civil Rights Movement. We will also host a special exhibit about the impact of material culture on the Civil Rights Movement between January 30 and February 4.

Join us for this year’s MLK Lost Film, Till, in preparation for a campus visit from Jalyn Hall, the actor who played Emmett Till in this major motion picture. “Till is a profoundly emotional and cinematic film about the true story of Mamie Till Mobley's relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who, in 1955, was brutally lynched while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. Actor Jalyn Hall is best known for his roles as Dillon James on All American and Emmett Till in the 2022 biographical film TILL where he starred opposite Danielle Deadwyler and Whoopi Goldberg. In addition to playing the iconic role of Emmett Till, Jalyn also portrayed another important historic figure with his guest starring role as a young “Martin Luther King Jr.” in GENIUS: MLK/X, a series for Disney+/National Geographic. Currently, Jalyn can be seen starring in the new hit series “The Crossover,” based on the bestselling Newbery Award-winning novel-in-verse by author, poet and educator Kwame Alexander. Come and hear Jayln share his reflections on lessons he’s learned in portraying movement figures and what their lives can teach us today.

- MLK Paint Night: This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March and the passage of the Voting Rights Act. In recognition of this historic event, come paint the Edmund Pettus Bridge, a symbol of the past and future importance of being a bridge-builder today. In honor of Dr. King’s legacy of social justice and equity, the Agapé Center will partner with Hope Walks to offer a service project on Thursday, January 23rd from 4:00-5:30 PM at the Jordan/Kline Atrium. Hope Walks seeks to free children, families, and communities from the burden of clubfoot – providing free and holistic care for families impacted by this treatable disability. Join us in painting braces for children diagnosed with clubfoot in Rwanda, Kenya, and Ethiopia.
Our purpose is to reflect together on the vision and Christian ministry of Dr. King for the purpose of encouraging and cultivating a deeper commitment to be God's agents of justice, peace and reconciliation.
