In addition to the specific resources included, there is a list of professional associations that often provide regional, national and international opportunities for career development and networking.

 

Professional Organizations

  • - The American Counseling Association is a not-for-profit, professional and educational organization that is dedicated to the growth and enhancement of the counseling profession.  By providing leadership training, publications, continuing education opportunities, and advocacy services to nearly 45,000 members, ACA helps counseling professionals develop their skills and expand their knowledge base.
  • - Within the American Counseling Association there are 20 divisions. These divisions enhance professional identity and are organized around specific interest and practice areas. The divisions provide professional strength and satisfy the diverse needs of the counseling community.
  • - The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) is the professional association for the field of marriage and family therapy. They represent the professional interests of more than 50,000 marriage and family therapists throughout the United States, Canada and abroad. 
  • - IAMFC is an organization that promotes excellence in the practice of couples and family counseling by creating and disseminating publications and media products, providing a forum for exploration of family-related issues, involving a diverse group of dedicated professionals in our activities, and emphasizing collaborative efforts.
  • - The American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) is a growing community of more than 6,000 clinical mental health counselors. AMHCA succeeds in giving a voice to the counseling profession nationwide and in helping to serve you and your colleagues in your state. 
  • - The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) supports school counselors' efforts to help students focus on academic, personal/social and career development so they achieve success in school and are prepared to lead fulfilling lives as responsible members of society.  ASCA provides professional development, publications and other resources, research and advocacy to more than 30,000 professional school counselors around the globe.
  • - AACC is committed to assisting Christian counselors, the entire ‘community of care,’ licensed professionals, pastors, and lay church members with little or no formal training. It is their intention to equip clinical, pastoral, and lay care-givers with biblical truth and psychosocial insights that minister to hurting persons and helps them move to personal wholeness, interpersonal competence, mental stability, and spiritual maturity. 
  • - The National Employment Counseling Association (NECA) is the leading resource for all things related to employment.  NECA is a division of the American Counseling Association and was founded in 1966 to implement solid and practical interventions to enhance employability and long-term employment.

Outlook for Counselors


The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a nationally recognized source of career information, designed to provide valuable assistance to individuals making decisions about their future work lives. The Handbook is revised every two years.
