Profile

Dr. James K. Winfield is an adjunct professor in higher education and serves full-time as the associate dean of first-year experience, general education, and retention strategies for Southern New Hampshire University's Global Campus. He amasses experience and research expertise in first-year programs, academic support, access, and success, and supporting underrepresented students with a special interest in understanding first-generation college students. Dr. Winfield is actively involved in NASPA, serves on the Center Advocacy Group for the Center for First-generation Student Success, and is co-chair of the Black First-gen Collective. He has co-authored and sole-authored peer-reviewed publications in the Journal of Faculty Development (2019), New Directions for Higher Education (2022), and Opportunity Matters: Journal of Access and Opportunity in Education (2022). Dr. Winfield's latest contribution includes a chapter on alternative course assignments featured in the 2024 book Culturally Affirming and Meaningful Assignments.
